Blog Post #1- 3/7/16

Directed by Clint Eastwood, The Mystic River involves predetermined events and fate. Dave’s death was inevitable. There was nothing he would or could have done to escape his fate. When Dave was kidnapped, many would have believed he’d died then, but instead he escaped. The event where he should of probably died, he ended up avoiding death. Although Dave fled from death, he was punished with the absence of innocence and traumatic memories. The night of Katie’s murder, Dave coincidently was also caught up in a bloody incident. It was unfortunate Dave become a suspect due to the occurrence on the same night and both incidents entailed blood. It was foreseeable that Dave would be eventually accused of Katie’s murder because all the evidence seemed to match up. Even though Dave was clearly attacked the night of Jimmy’s daughter’s murder, the odds were against him and it was fate that his life would come to an end.Dave and his wife attempt to prove him innocent, but their efforts only proceed to make him look guiltier. This is because Dave won’t admit to his wife what truly happened which leads to groggy explanations to the suspicious police. The repercussion of dishonesty is the assumption and later death of Dave. Dave tried to avoid the results of what would occur if he told the police what happened that night by not saying anything, but when he finally admits to the truth, he’s too late.        A French proverb states, “You often meet your fate on the road you take to avoid it.” This quote pertains to Dave’s avoidance of his fate by remaining quiet about his event, but in doing so it directed him to the path of his inevitable doom.

  1. Dave did escape death, yet, was it really worth it? He experiences the traumatic images of the incident continuously, he sees his own friends and wife as untrustworthy, and he ends up being the suspect of Katie's death. Ultimately, Dave escapes death as a child only to be faced with it again in his adulthood. Maybe his true fate was to end all those years ago rather than go through such despair.

  2. Dave's life seemed to be stuck in a circle, it was as if fate was controlling his end. His name was never fully written on the cement, his life was always meant to be left interrupted. The day he was taken by "cops" he was put in the back seat of a car going to an undisclosed location with malevolent men. On the day of his death, he was also brought to his doom by two men in a car, where he also sat in the backseat. It almost made me feel as though no matter what Dave did, his life would always end up being cut short. Whether it be fate or coincidence Dave truly had the misfortune of being at the wrong place at the wrong time.
